Apply as an Affiliated Student

Current GW students who want to be involved in DTAIS but don’t have the space to complete all of the requirements may be excellent candidates to become DTAIS affiliates. Affiliates have partial access to many of the same programmatic elements as full fellows but aren’t funded by the program or required to complete the full DTAIS curriculum. Affiliate fellows will work with a DTAIS advisor during the application process to determine their individual requirements and responsibilities. Recommendations may include:

  • Enrollment in the DTAIS seminar
  • Completing one or more of the required DTAIS courses
  • Completing a DTAIS-aligned dissertation
  • Participation in some components of the mentorship program

Applicants can be current MS or PhD students. Most applicants will come from a CS or EMSE background, but students from other disciplines are welcome to apply provided they have adequate prior coursework and relevant research interests. Prospective affiliates can apply to DTAIS at any time by submitting a two-page essay. Your essay is expected to address:

  • Why you are interested in joining DTAIS
  • How your current research is “aligned” with DTAIS (e.g. how it addresses AI/ML, work systems design, the future of work, etc.)
  • How participating in DTAIS will enable you to advance your research

DTAIS faculty and staff will review your application and respond with your decision by the end of the current semester. Students who are accepted as affiliates will be connected with a DTAIS advisor who will outline your individual requirements and when you should expect to start in the program.

Questions and applications can be directed to [email protected] or to DTAIS program coordinator Cody Dunn at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you!
